    Hi,

I was wondering if anybody had the same Roller Furler as above and could explain to me how mine works. I know it’s the original system from the 70s and was on Westerlys etc. My problem is that it doesn’t have a halyard attached to the mast. You can see in the first photo the top swivel with a wire that drops down and connects to the furler drum with a bit of rope, but I don’t see how I can raise the sail without a halyard. I have tried pulling on the wire to see if the top swivel will come down but it seems stuck. Maybe, I’m missing something.  Was this a way to raise the headsail I don’t know about? Thank you for any guidance. My other question is what roller furler have members changed to? Is the Plastimo 609s suitable? Thanks in advance for any replies. Paul

That is the same type of installation as the Rotostay, which was fitted to many Macwesters (and other makes) from 1972 onwards. I had one on my previous MW 27.

If you look carefully at the top swivel, you can see the flexible wire halyard that goes through the sheave on the part of the swivel which turns with the luff profile. That should come back down to be attached to the head of the sail, to be able to hoist the luff all the way up the groove in the profile. I will find some photos on my desktop computer to show you more details

    Hi Paul

    Hi Paul

I think my foresail is a Plastimo but not sure about the model. It’s hoisted with a halyard and is very easy to work. I’ll try and pop down to the marina tomorrow, Grand Harbour Marina in Birgu, Malta, and have a look,

Before I fitted the furling mechanism I had to just hoist the foresail so have no experience of any other makes.

    Hi Paul.

I was going to answer in the same vein as Bob. When you have pulled down the wire and attached the sail head, hoist the sail up groove and attach the foot of the sail to the drum. Make the halyard fast to the drum too.

When you let the sail out, beware letting the rope fully out as it can become loose and tangled on the drum. This means you cannot pull the sail back in again.
