<li style=”text-align: left;”>I have a macwester 27 and there is some play on the cutlas bearing. It seems that the rudder is to close to remove the prop? Will I need to drop the rudder when I come to do it. It’s a job I may be planning for next year. Or does the rudder not have to be removed!

I had a survey done recently and have written an article about in the latest journal.

My boat is a Macwester 26 but I think the 27 is the same design.

Yes, you do have to remove the rudder because you have to take the prop shaft out too and the rudder gets in the way.  Fortunately, or rather unfortunately, I needed a new rudder shaft and bearings so it all had to come out anyway.

My boat had to be craned out and supported quite high up in order to be able to drop the rudder. My article includes some pictures so you’ll see what I mean.

I’ve a few extra pictures now so let me know if you’d like to see them.

Yes please that would be great. We can crane out normally in October, so that’s not a problem. A job for next year me thinks. Please send pics if you can they always help thanks.

    Hi Terry

When I get back home I will send you some photos of the modifications that had been done to the rudder stock ( and the top of the rudder, to have flanges welded to the rudder stock, (rather like the coupling for the propeller shaft to attach it to the back of the gearbox). That can then be unbolted to remove the rudder blade sideways, instead of having to lift the boat 2 metres above the ground.

The rudder must have been modified, to add the flange.
