    Hello everyone,

I am in some Kind of trouble. I have removed the wheel to get it sanded and repainted. The nut that holds the wheel in place is basically rotten, thread has been severely damaged during removal as it was quite corroded.

The stainless steel axis though Is in outstanding condition.

I must replace the nut. At first try, taking some measurements, I guess it was a metric 18mm x 1.5 mm (I am a continental guy!) Unfortunately it does not fit. Comparing inside diameter of thread the 18 metric is missing about 0.4mm, too small so.

So my guess would be it is an imperial thread and on paper, 11/16-18 would be the closest dimension .

Did anyone had to remove this damned nut and know its specification? Without a solution, my Mac is grounded… please help. Thanks beforehand.  David

Hi there. A boat of that age will be in imperial measurements. You need to dismantle the shaft, take the shaft to an engineering shop where they will run a dye down the thread and also make you a new nut to fit.

Your steering pedestal is mostly likely Whitlock.

David, I had problems acquiring imperial fasteners whilst in the canal du midi as my old Volvo penta had. Try visiting your nearest John Deare tractor as they carry all sorts of imperial/US equivalent. If not grab a Zeus engineers handy thread sizing booklet. You will be able to identify the pitch, distance between thread tops from a tabulation, a Vernier caliper would be also needed.
