Charles TilleyParticipantThanks Geoffrey. I have talked with Beta who as you say are very helpful. They have advised 30 or 35hp. However, I recollect another Seaforth owner saying they have a Beta 50 which they were very pleased with, and my current Volvo Penta is 65hp. I just wonder if there is some formula based on weight and shape? Thanks again.
Charles TilleyParticipantI have an e-propulsion engine. We’ve had it for 2 years. It is excellent. If used at lowish revs, the battery lasts for 10+ hours. Because the engine splits in two – battery & engine – it is very easy to fit on the dinghy without risk of falling overboard!
Charles TilleyParticipantThanks Chris for your very prompt response. I will try your suggestion re the pole.
Best wishes and happy new year

Charles TilleyParticipantThanks Mike. Very helpful. Brizo does 5 knots but I think I am being very conservative on RPM at 1700.
Best wishes

Charles TilleyParticipantThanks Mike. With your BMC engine and a flat sea what is your optimal speed?
Best wishes

Charles TilleyParticipantLooks like a lovey boat Philip. We bought our 1986 Macwester Seaforth 36 in November 2021 and are now in our second season based in Bembridge, Isle of Wight. We are enjoying her, named Brizo, very much.
I know you are keen to learn from others and am happy to share our limited knowledge, but I have a couple of questions which you might be able to help with!
Firstly, I see from the pictures that you have self steering linked to the wheel. Is it effective and if so what is the make and model.
Secondly, I have a Volvo Perkins MD30A 1986 engine. I have asked many people but have so far not been able to get an answer as to the optimum RPM for speed and fuel economy. If you have the same engine, I would welcome your view.
Thanks. Charles Tilley
Charles TilleyParticipantThanks for all your advice. I hope to meet up with you all this summer
Best wishes
Charles
Charles TilleyParticipantMany thanks for your advice which is very helpful and I will try this next time I go out later this month. This season when I have motored for some 60 hours, I have typically motored at 1500 to 1800RPM, and never more than 2000. From your advice it sounds like the limit is not the engine RPM but my boat’s dynamics. Is that correct?
