    I guess it all comes down to what make the engine is. If it is BMC engine then spares plentiful and the cost will not break the bank, if an old Petter, spare are about, and quite low cost, if it is Beta, spares are again not a problem, maybe a little more expensive than a BMC, if it is  Yanmar, the  spare are going to be quite expensive, if it is a Volvo, then get a bank loan.  As to an outboard, it all depend on the size of the boat, but I would not be happy having a lot of petrol on board. Remember, a large engine does not mean more speed. To see the ideal size engine for your boat, go to https://www.vicprop.com/displacement_size.php,  there is a calculator for boat hull type, and engine,  but remember a sail boat is a displacement/semi displacement hull, not a planing hull, well in the case of a Macwester. I used that calculator when I re-engined my Snapdragon 747, and it was spot on.

    Hi both, no real need to know the number, but it would be nice to know. I have most of the paperwork from when the boat was first built. In the original Certificate of British Registry it say official number 35728. Name, Gabbo. Built, Little Hampton When Built, 1971. Registered 1972 Macwester Maine Co Ltd. Owner, Marion Chambler, House wife, Kenneth Chambler Medical Practitioner. (and the address in Healthfeild Sussex) It was later sold and the name changed to Malabar. It was in Chichester for some time where it was converted to a “live aboard” in Chichester Harbour and the name changed to Lavantian. It is still called Lavantian. Converting it back from a “live aboard” has been quite a task, the hull was lined with one inch polystyrene, then plastered over! A wood burning stove was put in the front between the bunks and sheets of steel bolted against the glass fibre lockers.In short the boat was in a real mess when I bought it. The only redeeming things were, the hull was epoxied, and a new Beta 35hp engine.gearbox shaft and prop were installed, and all the standing rigging replaced, then the boat went almost no where, the engine/gearbox/shaft and prop have only done 370 hours. I paid less than the cost of the engine for the boat, but have spent a lot on trying to update the boat and replace all the old galvanized steel work, still it keeps me active.

    Hello Linda, thank your for your response to my post, but I am afraid I have to disagree. The Association may not be directly involved in the FB group, but it was set up by Association members in the first place. Face book shows four of the people who are on the administration of the group are members of the Association, Aitch Wilkins, Mike Howard, Andrew Reed and yourself. Cat Mantra set a similar group, then when it was pointed out to him there was already a FB group for Macwester owners/sailors, he joined the existing group and was allowed onto the admin of the group. Cat Mantra, did have a Mac 27, but sold it, he now has a Westerly, so why is this man still making decisions that exclude me from the group? I feel very aggrieved about the whole situation. I love my Macwester and have spent the best part of five years working to get it back in good condition, and could contribute a great deal of knowledge to the FB group, but are unable to do so. Please tell me why the other members of the FB admin allow Cat Manta to have me band from the group. If you all dislike me so much, then say so and I will go away.
